Come to Me

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

For the last few days, I have felt tired and sleepy. Last night, I slept for almost 7 hours; that is a rarity for me. This morning, I felt great; invigorated.

I have a busy life; my days are short. I need every waking hour to accomplish my spiritual, spousal, parental, professional, and personal commitments; my sleep is limited. However, I know that I need to sleep well to function properly as a Christian, spouse, parent, workers, and human being. It is an important and necessary, but challenging balancing act.

I pray to God daily to give me the energy to serve him, my family, my community and myself in a way that honors Jesus. The greatest commandments are “You should love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind…You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37,39) This cannot be done alone. We need God’s help and guidance. He knows that. That’s why he sent his only son so we can find in him our strength and our rest.

We are fragile and mortal beings; no amount of rest, nutrition or balanced life schedule will spare us from the labors and burdens of the world. The great news, however, is that Jesus made a covenant of hope with us unlike any action we can make on our own: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”
